Rediscovering Color: My Journey Back to Art
Rediscovering Color
"Canvases bloom with what endures,
Light bleeds through shadow,
And color rises from ruin,
In the art of rediscovering color."
Rediscovering Color represents my return to art after many years of silence. I grew up learning art from someone who should have protected me, but instead became a source of abuse. That experience shaped much of my life, and for a long time, it kept me from celebrating the very thing that is so deeply integral to who I am.
That early hurt, compounded years later by fear, self-doubt, and addiction, caused me to stop pursuing art, leaving mostly half-finished doodles to mark the decade that followed.
I’ve never been great with words, heavily relying on imagery to communicate what I feel. By not pursuing art, I shut down the one outlet that could help me understand myself and the pain I was going through. I didn’t even realize how deeply that affected me all this time, not until I picked up a paint brush this past year.
In 2025, I reached a point where I could not move forward without art. I chose to face discomfort, stop comparing myself, and allow myself to learn again. Sobriety has given me the clarity to reconnect with my creativity, and to rebuild the parts of myself I had pushed away.
My work now is about reclaiming what was always mine: my voice, my imagination, my heart. Healing isn’t perfect, in fact it’s messy, slow, and often painful, but creating again has helped me navigate it in a way I haven't been able to before. These pieces are part of that process. They come from a place of rebuilding, of coping, and of choosing to step back into my own life.
In Rediscovering Color, I've taken back what is mine.
